Freedom to Shout is a powerful and transformative workshop designed to help faith leaders, ministry teams, and congregational caregivers respond to the growing mental health crisis affecting Black communities.
For generations, the Black Church has served as a source of healing, resilience, and hope in times of adversity. Today, communities are confronting an urgent mental health crisis, particularly among young people. This workshop calls on the Church to deepen its capacity to respond with wisdom, compassion, and practical, life-saving support.
Facilitated by Dr. Brittany Taylor, Freedom to Shout will address depression, suicide prevention, and emotional wellness through a holistic biopsychosocial-spiritual lens, integrating faith-centered care with evidence-based approaches.
Participants will gain:
Greater awareness of the mental health challenges affecting Black communities
Tools to recognize signs of depression and suicidal distress
Practical strategies for responding compassionately and effectively
Psychological First Aid skills for real-time crisis situations
Guidance for reducing stigma and encouraging healthy conversations about mental and emotional wellness within the Church
The workshop will be held Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 11:45 AM at Morning Star Fellowship Hall, 1014 E. Pine St., Tulsa, OK 74106.
Following the workshop, participants are invited to join the Walk for Healthy Living at 12:00 PM at B.S. Roberts Park, 901 N. Greenwood Ave., Tulsa, OK 74106. Participants are responsible for their own transportation between locations.
